Getting There

  • Car

    To get to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage from Horton Plains National Park by car, start by exiting the park and heading towards the A7 highway. Follow the signs for Nuwara Eliya and continue on the A7 for approximately 20 kilometers until you reach the intersection with the A1 highway. Turn left onto the A1 and continue for about 25 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to Rambukkana. Once you enter Rambukkana, follow the signs to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which will be on your left. The entire journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Ensure you have cash for any tolls or parking fees.

    If you are traveling by public transport, first take a bus from Horton Plains to Nuwara Eliya city center. Buses run frequently and the fare is usually around 100 LKR. From Nuwara Eliya, take a bus heading towards Rambukkana; this journey will cost about 150 LKR and take approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive in Rambukkana, you can either walk to the orphanage, which is about 1.5 kilometers away, or hire a tuk-tuk for around 300 LKR to take you directly to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
