Getting there

Public Bus

From Kandy, head to the Kandy Central Bus Stand. Look for buses heading towards Matale; they are frequent and should have a sign indicating their destination. Once on the bus, enjoy the scenic ride for about 30-40 minutes until you reach the Matale Bus Station. After disembarking, head to the main road and look for a local bus or a three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) to take you to Riverston Basecamp. You can ask the driver to take you to 'Madaela, Pitawala' which is the closest area to your destination. The ride might take an additional 20-30 minutes.

Tuk-Tuk

From wherever you are in Kandy, simply hail a tuk-tuk and tell the driver you want to go to Riverston Basecamp in Madaela, Pitawala. Make sure to negotiate the fare before starting your journey. The trip usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours as it covers a distance of approximately 30 km, passing through beautiful landscapes.

Walking and Hiking

If you are adventurous and want to experience the local environment, you can walk to the Riverston Basecamp. However, this is for experienced hikers. Start from Kandy and walk towards the direction of Matale, following the main road. Be prepared with proper gear, as this is a long hike, and you will need to navigate through rural areas. It is advisable to ask locals for directions as you approach Matale. This journey could take several hours, so start early in the day.
