Origins Amid Baltic Power Plays

In 1394, supporters of Albrekt av Mecklenburg seized two towers in Visby's Ringmur to dominate the city and its burgeoning harbor. The Teutonic Order briefly expanded this foothold from 1398 to 1408. True construction of Visborgs Slott began in 1411 under King Erik of Pomerania, who laid the first stone on August 1. Positioned in the southwestern corner, the castle integrated the ancient city wall as its defense on two sides, spanning nearly 3000 square meters.The fortress symbolized royal authority amid turbulent times. Gotlanders supplied labor, taxes, and materials, often under duress, as Danish overseers like Thrugot Hass directed the build.

Erik's Pirate Haven and Sieges

After losing his throne in 1437, Erik retreated to Visborgs Slott, launching ruthless privateering raids across the Baltic from this base. The well-fortified structure withstood a prolonged 1448 siege by Karl Knutsson's forces, protecting Erik despite fierce assaults on Visby that razed homes.Generations of Danish commanders followed, including Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, Laurens Schinkel, and Søren Norby, who held it until 1525. Modernizations came under Christian II in 1539–1544, led by Wladislaw Wobisser.

Danish Stronghold and Final Years

Sweden gained Gotland in 1645 via the Peace of Brömsebro, but the castle lay dilapidated after Danish sabotage. During the Scanian War in 1676, Danish forces under Niels Juel recaptured Visby; commander Mikael Schoultz surrendered quickly. Brief repairs by Danish lords Christian Bilefeldt and Marin Barthold preceded the 1679 demolition orders from Copenhagen as Sweden reclaimed the island.From July to September, the castle was systematically razed and exploded, leaving only faint traces.
