Nestled in the remote wilds of northern Jämtland between Stora Blåsjön and Leipikvattnet, Korallgrottan stands as Sweden's longest cave, stretching more than six kilometers through marble bedrock. Four entrances—Klyftgrottan, Skymningsgrottan, Isingången, and Doliningången—invite adventurers into a labyrinth secured by an iron gate, emphasizing guided access for safety amid tight crawls and uncharted depths.

Coral-Like Formations and Slow Growth

The cave's name derives from its abundance of small, white stalactites resembling ocean corals—knobby, bulbous speleothems no taller than 10 cm despite 8,000 years of growth since the last Ice Age. Dripping calcium-rich water deposits limestone at a glacial pace of about 1 cm per millennium, adorning walls with banded marble patterns, scallops, and potholes. A waterfall greets visitors at one entrance, enhancing the subterranean drama.

Geological and Ecological Riches

Kalksten (limestone) veins underpin the area's frodig vegetation: lush forests to the east, mountain birch and bare fjäll to the west. Storliden's east slope harbors near-virgin old-growth forest. The reserve, an IUCN Category Ib wilderness and Natura 2000 site managed by Jämtland's County Administrative Board, preserves biodiversity in this Arctic Circle-proximate haven near Norway's border.

Venturing inside demands caving gear for crawling through dim passages into grand salas, where torchlight reveals shimmering formations.
