Engineering Triumph of the Seventies

Construction of Åre Kabinbana began in February 1975, with a temporary transport line hauling materials to the peak. By June, the towering steel supports stood ready, and that winter, massive cables were strung across the 2900-meter span. Inaugurated on May 6, 1976, it remains Sweden's only cable car, engineered to conquer 853 meters of vertical rise—the steepest single drop in Scandinavia. Two pendular cabins, each spanning 16 square meters, operate in tandem, counterbalancing each other as one ascends and the other descends.

Robust Design Against Mountain Fury

The station's four steel pylons, soaring 40 to 60 meters high and anchored in bedrock, withstand icing and gales up to 70 meters per second—a unique adaptation to Åreskutan's harsh climate. Each cabin dangles from twin 3190-meter bearing cables weighing 43 tons apiece, propelled by a 2900-meter looped haul rope driven by dual 500-kilowatt DC motors at the base. Cruising at up to 10 meters per second, the journey spans seven minutes under optimal conditions, with cabins holding up to 80 passengers.

At 1274 meters above sea level, Övre Kabinstation opens doors to Åreskutan's prepared slopes and trails. Winter unleashes world-class skiing, with the station serving as a hub for lifts and runs. Summer transforms the area into a hiker's paradise, with paths leading 800 meters to the 1420-meter summit. The facility houses operational spaces, blending functionality with the raw drama of alpine surroundings.

Culinary Heights and Cozy Respite

Integrated into the bergstation, Basecamp Café mirrors the cable car's schedule, offering hot drinks and light fare against panoramic windows. During peak seasons, Toppstugan—Sweden's highest café—awaits atop Åreskutan, reachable by foot in summer or snowmobile in winter. These spots provide vital refueling amid the chill, their interiors warmed by the hum of mountain life.
