Tysjöarna Nature Reserve encompasses two striking lime lakes surrounded by expansive marl fields, recognized as one of the largest such areas globally. These shallow, mineral-rich waters create a unique calcareous environment where marl— a soft, calcium carbonate deposit—forms vast, pale expanses along the shorelines. Springs bubble up through the sediment, feeding rich fens adorned with tufa formations, those porous, rocky deposits built by mineral precipitation. This mosaic of open water, wetlands, and old arable land supports an extraordinary biodiversity, drawing nature enthusiasts to its quiet shores.

From early April, the reserve awakens with the resonant calls of cranes and the trumpeting of whooper swans echoing over the lakes. Lapwings, curlews, and ruffs arrive soon after, patrolling the muddy edges. Peak activity unfolds in May and June, when marl flats teem with long-legged waders like little ringed plovers, Temminck's stints, and little stints foraging in the shallows. Three elevated birdwatching towers offer prime vantage points to observe these migrants and breeding species such as tufted ducks, black-tailed godwits, and redshanks without disturbance.

The alkaline, moisture-laden soils foster specialized plant life, including a profusion of orchids like early marsh, meadow, wood crane's-bill, and bee orchids. Calcareous fens burst with moisture-loving species, their vivid greens contrasting the stark white marl. Wetland forests and open mires fringe the lakes, providing habitat for amphibians, reptiles, and insects adapted to this niche. The reserve's 4.5 square kilometers, protected since 2013 as part of the EU Natura 2000 network, preserve these delicate ecosystems amid Jämtland's forested landscapes.

A well-signposted 7 km path links the northern and southern lakes, weaving through forests, over boardwalks in boggy sections, and past rest areas. The northern entrance features a kilometer-long wooden ramp, wide enough for wheelchairs, prams, or walkers, leading directly to a bird tower. Shorter loops allow partial exploration, with footbridges easing passage over wet rocks. Three access points—north via Ås, south from Lugnvik, and west along E14—provide flexibility, though traffic noise from the nearby motorway occasionally intrudes on the tranquility.

Managed by Jämtland County Administrative Board, Tysjöarna enforces regulations to safeguard its wildlife: no capturing, disturbing, or harming birds, mammals, amphibians, or reptiles; no damaging nests or collecting eggs. Visitors are encouraged to stick to paths, minimizing impact on this fragile wetland. Information boards and downloadable maps enhance understanding of the area's geology and ecology, inviting mindful appreciation of its natural theater.
