Over decades the site expanded and was reorganised to show chronological courtyard scenes: a croft from the 1780s, a prosperous Storgård (main farm) from the 1880s and a Peri‑Hanscha farm representing the 1920s, plus a country store illustrating life in the 1940s.

The museum’s roughly fifty wooden structures are not just static shells — interiors preserve the layout, furnishings and decorative details that speak of domestic rhythm, seasonal work and social life. You’ll find a blacksmith’s space, a simple crofter’s dwelling, granaries and barns, and communal buildings where dances and church‑town connections once bound people together. The country store is a particular touchpoint: its layout and display recall the practical commerce that tied isolated farms to wider markets.

Hägnan sits between Gammelstad Church Town — itself a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble — and the Gammelstadsviken wetland, which is included in protected habitat networks. That positioning gives the museum a layered setting: the wooden village is read against a coastal bay and open fields, and seasonal light and weather are part of the experience; long summer days and winter stillness alter how the buildings and their shadows present themselves.

The outdoor area is open year‑round, enabling contemplative winter walks among snow‑lined roofs as well as green, bird‑filled approaches in summer.
