Each winter Luleå Municipality gauges ice thickness and, when safe, opens a network of cleared lanes on the frozen bay that wrap the city peninsula and extend to nearby islets. Using heavy machines the crew ploughs and smooths the surface so that a polished skating lane sits beside a snow sidewalk for walkers and runners. The finished circuit is typically around ten to eleven kilometres long but varies yearly with ice quality and weather.

On a crisp, clear morning the Isbanan feels like a city-sized winter promenade: families push strollers on the prepared snow sidewalk, commuters glide on long-distance skates, and children bounce on borrowed kicksleds kept at designated racks. There are simple windbreaks and wooden shelters dotted on the ice, many with built-in grills and stacks of firewood so people can pause and warm up beside a small open flame.

The soundscape is a mix of distant city hum and immediate winter textures: the rasp of skate blades, occasional laughter, the metallic clack of a kicksled, and a soft wind over flat white ice. Visual highlights include low winter sun slanting across glassy surfaces, pale-blue cracks threaded into translucent ice, and when night falls the chance to gaze for northern lights away from most streetlights.

Entrances are located near Norra hamn and Södra hamn and sometimes at other harbours when conditions permit; those points are often accessible for wheelchairs and strollers along the snow sidewalk. Free-to-borrow kicksleds are usually placed at entrance racks and longer skate rentals are available in town. Benches, information boards and marked fire pits are positioned at regular intervals to support longer outings.

The Isbanan opens only after municipal checks confirm safe ice thickness—commonly between late December and mid-January—and closes as thaw makes maintenance unsafe, typically in March or early April. Conditions change fast: wind, currents and spring melt create pressure ridges and open water patches, so the route is actively monitored and segments can be closed or adjusted for safety.

More than a recreational facility, the ice track is woven into the city’s winter identity. It creates an unusual urban-nature interface where residents and visitors experience the frozen archipelago on foot, blade or sled. The Isbanan supports everyday exercise, festive gatherings around grills, and quiet moments beneath an arctic sky—all on a surface that exists for only a few remarkable months each year.
