How the hill became a stage

Trollparken on Garpedansberget began as a public-art project that transformed a steep, tree-clad ridge into a narrative landscape of carved and cast figures. Over the course of the 2000s an artist collaborated with a local association to place some eighty-odd sculptures — giants, trolls, nymphs and other mythic creatures — along a short hiking track. The figures are made primarily from fibre-reinforced concrete and are sited to feel like they grow from the rock, nestle in hollows or peer from behind trunks, so the artwork reads as part of the place rather than a separate installation.

An unfolding walk of discovery

The route up Garpedansberget is a compact experience: a defined footpath through mixed pine and birch woodland that rises steadily to a small plateau and viewing point. Sculptures appear both singly and in small scenes — musicians, dancers, guardians and serpentine creatures — arranged so that changing your position alters the composition. The trail is short rather than remote, but the woodland setting and the placement of the figures give a sense of surprise and discovery at every bend.

Materials, scale and storytelling

Most figures are life-sized or slightly larger and crafted to read at close range as well as from a short distance. The resin- or concrete-based construction is robust for outdoor display and detailed enough to convey character: facial expressions, gestures and costume-like textures. Together the sculptures assemble into an implied narrative about Garpe, the local giant, and his invited guests; scenes suggest feasting, music, watchfulness and mischief rather than a single literal tale, letting visitors invent parts of the story as they move through the site.

Landscape and viewpoints

At the top the path opens to small clearings and a simple pavilion- or gazebo-like structure that acts as a natural pause point. From here there are framed views over Gamleby and Gamlebyviken: water, village roofs and wooded islands in the distance. The rock outcrops and mossy stones close to the summit make natural places to sit and picnic. Seasonal light changes — low winter sun, dappled summer shade and autumn colour — alter the mood of both the sculptures and the surrounding trees.

Sensory character and practical feel

The park’s atmosphere is playful and slightly uncanny: the hush of the woodland, the textured bark under hand, the earthy scent of leaf litter and the occasional call of a bird combine with the anthropomorphic figures to produce an intimate, imaginative outing. The ascent is on a natural path with tree roots and irregular rock steps; good footwear is recommended. Sculptures are outdoors year-round and will take on different personalities depending on weather and season.

Trollparken works particularly well for families with children, anyone interested in folk motifs or outdoor sculpture, and walkers looking for a short, characterful diversion. The experience is low-cost (free to enter) and short in duration, but rich in visual detail; bring water and outdoor-appropriate clothing, and plan for a modest climb on an unpaved trail.
