In 1915, architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz won an international competition to design a new cemetery south of Stockholm on overgrown gravel pits. Their 'Tallum' proposal revolutionized burial grounds, rejecting ornate monuments for a natural integration of landscape and architecture. Construction began in 1917, with the first phase—including the Woodland Chapel—consecrated in 1920. This vision emphasized equality, dignity, and harmony with nature, drawing from Nordic romanticism and functionalism.

Asplund and Lewerentz crafted chapels that seamlessly merge with the terrain. The Resurrection Chapel (1925), by Lewerentz, anchors the Path of Seven Wells with neoclassical elegance. Asplund's Woodland Crematorium (1940) features Faith, Hope, and Holy Cross chapels, their functionalist forms echoing tree trunks and evoking life's transitions. Sculptures by Carl Milles and others, like the Resurrection statue, add poetic depth, while details such as a key inserted into a skull-shaped lock on the Woodland Chapel invite contemplation.

The 250-hectare site unfolds through rolling hills, dense pine groves, and open vistas. Almhöjden hill offers meditative views, its stairs shortening toward the summit to foster peace. The granite cross, inspired by Caspar David Friedrich yet open to universal interpretations, symbolizes hope amid the forest. Paths meander minimally, preserving ancient Nordic burial archetypes, with graves clustered naturally without rigid alignment.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, Skogskyrkogården exemplifies 20th-century landscape architecture's profound impact worldwide. Its fusion of vegetation, topography, and buildings—criteria ii and iv—set a new standard for cemeteries. Though an active burial ground, it draws visitors for its serene beauty, especially around All Saints' Day, and hosts guided art and architecture walks in summer.
