Construction of Linköping Cathedral began around 1230 under Bishop Bengt of the Folkunga dynasty, who secured papal permission to expand an earlier Romanesque basilica. The original church, about a third of the current size, was transformed into a grand Gothic structure with a transept and new eastern choir. Master craftsmen shaped local limestone into soaring vaults and detailed blind arcades, blending English influences like leaf masks with German techniques.The Black Death halted progress in the 1300s, leaving the Romanesque choir intact until late Gothic chapels replaced it.
