In the 1360s, amid Sweden's fierce royal power struggles, Svaneholms borgruin emerged on what was then a true island in Kilarpesjön, surrounded by water and marshy grounds. This strategically vital spot in Östergötland's forests became a fortress, its construction tied to the era's noble factions vying for control. Fortress Design and Defenses

No ground-level entrance pierces the keep's base; access was probably via an external staircase or tower on upper levels, allowing defenders to repel invaders easily. Surrounding the core is a walled courtyard to the north, with a probable forecourt to the south. Entry to the inner yard may have been on the western side, flanked by 10-to-20-meter-wide moats on three sides and towering ramparts.Collapsed upper sections and outer walls have formed a steep mound, with the tower at its heart. The overall layout reflects medieval military architecture, prioritizing isolation and resilience. Over time, the lake level dropped, transforming the island into a promontory, yet the ruin's imposing silhouette endures.

Legend ties the site to a violent episode involving 'Garp'—a medieval slur for Germans—after a mercenary raid or battle, earning it the alternate name Garpe slott. Post-conflict, the fortress lost purpose, abandoned to decay. Its role faded as political winds shifted, leaving silent stones amid the woods.Roughly 500 meters northeast lies Skansberget fornborg, a prehistoric enclosure of earthen banks and cliffs, dated to between the birth of Christ and Viking times, peaking around 400-550 AD.
