An architect's private palace turned public gallery

Thielska Galleriet occupies a villa designed by Ferdinand Boberg and completed in the early 1900s for financier and collector Ernest Thiel. The building’s white façades, compact towers and composed façades show influences from late Jugendstil blended with Mediterranean and oriental touches, giving the house a distinctively eclectic, early‑modern profile that reads as both domestic and ceremonial.

The collection and its turn-of-the-century focus

The heart of the museum is the Thiel collection: chiefly Scandinavian painting and graphic work from around 1900 alongside selected European acquisitions. Portraits and national-romantic landscapes rub shoulders with expressive works by Edvard Munch and color-drenched pieces by Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Bruno Liljefors. Several rooms were conceived as picture-filled salons, so paintings are displayed within an historically sympathetic domestic layout rather than a neutral white-cube arrangement.

Over the decades the property has been adapted for museum use while keeping its historic character. Exhibition lighting, conservation standards and visitor facilities have been sensitively integrated: the lower-floor rooms host rotating temporary shows while the upper salons present the permanent collection. A café occupying an old service wing provides seasonal food and baked goods in a setting that echoes earlier household functions.
