Ancient Seas Carved in Stone

Around 490 million years ago, the land that would become Öland lay in a tropical climate near the southern tropic, surrounded by warm, shallow seas teeming with life. Lime sludge from vast coral reefs accumulated on the ocean floor, compressing over eons under immense pressure to form the island's thick limestone bedrock, up to 40 meters deep. It took roughly 1,000 years to deposit just one millimeter of this stone, a testament to the slow, relentless work of prehistoric nature.Waves have since battered the coast, eroding softer limestone layers and leaving behind harder pillars known as rauks. At Byrums Raukar, this process created about 120 such formations, standing as eerie sentinels along the shoreline. The tallest reach 4 meters in the southern section, gradually shrinking to about 1 meter northward, their irregular shapes evoking ancient sculptures shaped by the sea's unyielding force.

Fossils from Prehistoric Depths

Embedded within the rauks lies a rich fossil record, preserving creatures from up to 560 million years ago. Orthoceratites—straight-shelled cephalopods resembling ancient squid—are abundant, their polished forms glinting in the stone. Round ring-like fossils, distant relatives of modern sea urchins, dot the surfaces; Carl Linnaeus once dubbed them "crystal apples" for their lustrous appearance. Trilobites from the Asaphus genus are so prevalent in certain layers that they define stratigraphic levels in Öland's geology.These remnants offer a window into Ordovician seas, where bizarre marine life thrived amid coral reefs. Touching the stone, you connect with an era when Öland was submerged, its fossils locked in time as enduring witnesses to evolutionary history. Collecting them is prohibited to preserve this natural archive for future generations.

Nature Reserve's Coastal Drama

Designated a nature reserve in 1935, Byrums Raukar spans 3 hectares of dramatic coastline, managed by Länsstyrelsen Kalmar län. The site's geological significance makes it Öland's most renowned rauk area, drawing those fascinated by earth's transformative powers. Sparse vegetation clings to the rocky terrain, with thin soils supporting hardy plants amid the stark pillars.The reserve integrates with surrounding coastal features like Byrums Sandvik, enhancing its wild, untamed feel. Winds whip across the open landscape, carrying the salty tang of the Baltic Sea, while gulls cry overhead.
