Though never heavily settled, the wider Sälen region has long been part of summer grazing and trail networks that connected fäbodar and small farmsteads; traces of these old routes and former seasonal pastures persist in place names and landscape contours. Ö Kalven’s minor ridges and marsh edges formed practical summer grazing patches and waypoints for local travel before modern roads and the growth of winter tourism reshaped access and land use in the 20th century.

Ground conditions govern the mood here—firm and crunchy in frost, boggy in thaw—and proper footwear is essential.

Peatlands and small mountain mires are sensitive to trampling and slow to recover from erosion.
