Geology and the ridge’s birth

Tunåsen is a classic esker formed at the end of the last Ice Age when meltwater streams deposited sand and gravel in tunnels beneath the ice; the modern hummock rises roughly 30 metres above the surrounding plain and is one of several segments of the larger Uppsalaåsen formation. The ridge’s profile — long, narrow and composed of well-draining soils — explains the dry slopes and the presence of plants more typical of sandy grassland than of dense forest.

A living patchwork of special plants

Because the soil is thin and calcareous in places, Tunåsen supports an assemblage of drought-tolerant and heat-loving species; look for early spring pulses of backsippa (pasque flower) in sheltered spots, mats of grey fleabane and thyme-scented vegetation on the sunbaked upper slopes. Insects and ground-nesting bees exploit the warm microclimates, so the hill has a distinctly different seasonal chorus compared with nearby lowland meadows.

From the high point a framed vista opens southward to the spire of Uppsala Cathedral and across cultivated fields toward the city; northwards the landscape drops away toward the grassy bowl around the ancient royal mounds. The small summit area and adjacent clearings create a theatre-like vantage where light and weather dramatically alter the colour of the plains — pale winter grey, green summer patchwork, or the warm low sun of autumn.

A network of unpaved trails links Tunåsen to surrounding recreation areas and the pilgrim route Eriksleden; a short, signposted promenade known locally as the Linnéstig winds up to the viewpoint with a moderate climb. Scattered picnic tables and interpretive signs explain local natural history; several long, shallow basins and water-management installations lie at the ridge’s foot, reminders that the area combines municipal utility and open-space management while retaining a wild feeling.

Spring brings early flowers and lively bird activity; summer offers warm, open slopes for sun and picnics; autumn casts the ridge in ochres while winter exposes the esker’s contours and can bring crisp, expansive air. The terrain is primarily natural footing — packed sand and small stones — so it dries quickly after rain but can be slippery on steeper pitches in wet or icy conditions.

Tunåsen’s appeal is understated: it functions as a neighbourhood hill for walkers, runners and cyclists who value a quick nature fix near Gamla Uppsala.
