The name 'Carolina Rediviva'—Latin for 'the revived Carolina'—honors the razed 18th-century Academia Carolina while nodding to King Karl XIV Johan, who selected the site as crown prince.

Initially, the building balanced library functions with ceremonial duties, its vast Carolina Hall serving as the university's festal space, accessed by a lavish grand staircase. By 1887, with a new university house complete, the hall transformed into additional storage and reading areas. Architect Carl August Kihlberg oversaw 1888-1892 expansions, introducing a new main staircase, elevator, improved fire safety, and round windows for better light, cementing its role as a dedicated knowledge repository.

At its heart lies the Codex Argenteus, the 6th-century Silver Bible, inscribed in gold and silver ink on purple vellum in the extinct Gothic language—a linguistic cornerstone penned by Bishop Wulfila. Collections have ballooned since the 1841 move from Gustavianum, prompting ongoing adaptations: internal walls shifted, floors reconfigured, and satellite libraries added.
