Origins of the Narrow-Gauge Pioneer

The Upsala–Lenna Järnväg, affectionately known as Lennakatten, traces its roots to 1876 when it became the first 891 mm narrow-gauge railway in the Roslagen network. Built primarily to transport iron ore from the Länna ironworks to Uppsala's standard-gauge lines, it revolutionized local industry and connectivity in Uppland. This pioneering line spanned 33 km from Uppsala through Länna to Faringe, showcasing engineering adapted to the region's terrain.Over decades, it hauled freight and passengers until commercial operations wound down in the 1970s. Preservation efforts by the SRJmf society, backed by Uppsala Municipality, revived it as a heritage railway, safeguarding authentic tracks, signals, and rolling stock.

Lennakatten's collection features meticulously restored steam locomotives like the mighty Nummer 5 Thor, diesel engines, and 1950s railcars. These vehicles, with their polished brass fittings and wooden interiors, transport riders back to an era of rail travel when journeys were events in themselves. The narrow gauge—unique to Sweden—necessitated specialized designs, from compact boilers to agile carriages that hug the curves.Visitors can admire engines at Uppsala Östra station, a platform adjacent to the main Uppsala Central Station, where old points control boards still glow with vintage charm. Traffic pulses from mid-May to late September, with Sunday outings in June expanding to four days weekly in July. School charters and events like Lennakatten Day on June 28th or Kulturnatten in September draw crowds for themed rides. Winter brings the Santa Train during Advent, blanketing tracks in snow for festive magic.An Ice Cream Train delights in early June, blending nostalgia with treats. These runs underscore Lennakatten's role in community life, blending history with seasonal festivities.

Engineering Marvels and Preservation

The railway's survival stems from dedicated preservation since 1974, when Sunday passenger services began on freight lines. Post-1978 track removals elsewhere secured the Uppsala-Länna-Faringe segment.
