Rackstad Colony's Artistic Dawn

At the turn of the 20th century, a group of visionary artists gathered around Lake Racken in Arvika, forming the Rackstad colony. Led by Gustaf and Maja Fjaestad, who rented sculptor Christian Eriksson's studio Oppstuhage in 1898 before building their own home at Kampudden, this community embraced national romanticism. Their works capture a longing for nature, folk costumes, light, and shadow, fueled by affordable rural living and fresh inspiration from Värmland's landscapes.Björn Ahlgrensson and his wife Elsa settled in Perserud, joined later by Fritz Lindström. Local talents like Alfred Ekstam, Bror Sahlström, Ture Ander, and Bror Lindh enriched the circle. Maja Fjaestad excelled in painting, graphics, and textiles, co-founding Arvika Handicrafts in 1922, Sweden's oldest craft shop.

Rackstadmuseet preserves the colony's legacy in its permanent wing, displaying evocative paintings by Gustaf Fjaestad—known for winter motifs and luminous water scenes—and intricate crafts from the era. The lower level highlights fine local craftsmanship, reflecting arts and crafts movement influences that shaped Arvika's cultural identity.Sculptures by Christian Eriksson and his son Liss dot the surrounding park-like grounds, inviting exploration. Built in 1998, the museum's new hall rotates temporary exhibits featuring pre-modern, modern, and contemporary art from local, national, and international creators. Oppstuhage and Seasonal Studios

Oppstuhage, Christian Eriksson's former studio, was restored in 1994-1995 to its original state after Arvika Council acquired it in 1946. Declared a historic site in 1951, it offers insight into the sculptor's world during summer openings.Adjacent is Eriksson's 1920s summer studio, repurposed from a nail smithy with a traditional mansard roof. Its light-filled interior served for work and rest, now accessible seasonally to reveal the practical side of artistic life.

Gardens, Café, and Cultural Nexus

Surrounding the museum, gardens lead to Oppstuhage and Nytomta handicraft court, perfect for contemplative strolls. The on-site café provides homemade lunches, cakes, and light meals during opening hours, enhancing the visit with Värmland flavors.A small shop offers handicrafts, echoing the colony's traditions.
