Tilas Stoll dates from the mid‑18th century and carries the name of Daniel Tilas, an influential Swedish mining official and geologist. The cut into the hillside is a true stoll — a horizontal adit driven into the rock to investigate ore horizons, aid drainage and later to remove ore — and its carved, sometimes polished surfaces reveal the earlier, manual phase of mining before powder and mechanised methods became commonplace.

The accessible tunnel itself is relatively short (roughly twenty‑five metres) and fitted with a simple footbridge where the floor is uneven; inside you can clearly distinguish smoothed, hand‑worked sections and rougher faces where blasting was used in later periods. Immediately beyond the stoll the landscape opens into a network of former workings: wide open‑cast hollows, fenced deep shafts and scattered piles of glassy slag that mark where furnaces and processing once stood.

Approach Tilas Stoll and you’ll hear the hush of forest and the occasional call of birds, then feel a distinct coolness as you step from daylight into the short interior tunnel: stone close to the ear, damp air and a faint mineral tang. Light falls differently on the hand‑hewn faces; wider views across the pits open up once you return to the trail, offering sudden panoramas of carved earth and fenced shafts against an often pale Scandinavian sky.

The area is managed as a nature reserve that balances preservation of geological and cultural remains with public access; many shafts are fenced and information panels mark key features. Facilities are basic — parking areas and simple outhouse facilities at trailheads — and the terrain can be uneven. The site rewards quiet attention: it is a study in industrial geology and quiet landscape memory rather than a developed attraction with services.
