Birth of a Byway

The Anten-Gräfsnäs Järnväg emerged at the turn of the 20th century as part of the ambitious Västergötland–Göteborgs Järnväg, known as the Västgötabanan. Opened in 1900, this narrow-gauge line connected Göteborg to Skara, filling gaps left by the main Western Main Line built decades earlier. Anten station, a modest class 3 halt, was constructed alongside the tracks, later expanded in 1942 with a goods shed to handle local freight. The line wound through Västergötland's undulating terrain, serving rural communities cut off from major routes.

Preservation Triumph

Commercial operations dwindled after World War II, with passenger services ceasing in 1967 and full closure following soon after. Enthusiasts formed a museum association in the late 1960s, initially operating from Sjövik before relocating to Anten in 1970 and adopting the name Museiföreningen Anten-Gräfsnäs Järnväg. By 1965, the group had already marked 50 years of passion for this rail relic, celebrating milestones with restored engines and carriages. Today, volunteers maintain over 8 km of track, keeping the spirit of Sweden's smalspår railways alive.

Journey Through Time

Riding the heritage train feels like slipping into a sepia-toned photograph. Steam locomotives over a century old pull polished wooden carriages along the original route, chugging past birch forests and farmlands. The 20-30 minute trip from Anten to Gräfsnäs showcases the line's gentle curves and modest gradients, designed for light traffic in an era before highways dominated.
