The reserve is dominated by wide hayfields and grazed pastures interspersed with scattered veteran oaks. The hay-meadow management regime preserves species-rich grassland structure in many areas: short, flower-rich turf after traditional mowing and longer ungrazed swards in other patches. The veteran oaks are ecological keystones — weathered trunks, cavities and root hollows host a surprising array of invertebrates and lichens and give the site its distinctive, park-like appearance.

Across Brunsbo äng you can make out ancient field patterns and traces of farmsteads: long, narrow cultivation plots, stone-lined driveways once used to move livestock and the remains of house platforms and terrace edges. Brunsbo äng feels expansive and calm: a low hum of insect life in summer, the rough texture of veteran bark under hand, and the long sightlines between broad oak crowns. The soundscape shifts with season — skylarks and meadow birds in warmer months give way to an emptier hush in late autumn and winter. Areas of shade beneath large oaks provide cool pockets where the air smells faintly of dry grass and warm timber on sunny days.

As one of the larger preserved hay-meadow landscapes of the region, Brunsbo äng combines natural, cultural and historical values. It functions as a refuge for meadow species and for the specialized organisms that rely on old oaks while also preserving visible evidence of rural life stretching across millennia.
