Hovgården originated as a royal estate in the Viking Age and earlier, positioned to oversee maritime routes in Lake Mälaren and the bustling emporium of Birka across the water. The place includes monumental burial mounds—some excavated to reveal high-status boat burials—and traces of settlement layers that show continuous use from prehistory through the Middle Ages. Archaeological work over the 20th century has revealed cultic and administrative functions that mark Hovgården as a centre of political control rather than an ordinary village.

On a raised earthen terrace near the church lie the foundations of Alsnö hus, the brick-and-stone palace built in the 13th century when kings used the site for royal assemblies. The palace was the setting for the statutes and decisions that shaped medieval Swedish rule; while the building itself rapidly fell into ruin, its footprint and finds—roof tiles, crossbow bolts and masonry remnants—preserve the memory of a later, more formal phase of governance layered over the Viking-era landscape.

Among the open meadows and pasture around Hovgården stand runestones and memorial markers that connect names and titles to this place: one runestone dated to around the 11th century explicitly mentions royal association. The stone monuments, the clear sightlines toward the water and the placement of mounds and church emphasize how ritual, legal and representational activities were woven into the topography here.

Hovgården must be understood in dialogue with Birka on Björkö: Birka’s docks, trading lanes and craft areas formed the commercial complement to Hovgården’s administrative and ceremonial role. Archaeologists have identified former jetties, harbour installations and naust (boat-house remains) along the shorelines, demonstrating how sea and shore functioned together—trade goods, political power and seasonal movement all left traces along this narrow strait.

The site sits in low, open Mälaren meadows backed by forested moraines; the pastoral character and scattered 18th-century farmsteads have left the archaeological monuments unusually legible in the modern landscape. The juxtaposition of grassland, stone foundations and clustered earthworks creates a calm, expansive atmosphere where the scale of burial mounds and the terrace of Alsnö hus read clearly against the sky and water.

Today visitors encounter exposed masonry remains, several runic stones, visible mound profiles and interpretive markers that identify key finds and periods. Adelsö Church stands adjacent to the royal domain, linking ecclesiastical architecture and runic memorials with the broader sequence of occupation. The site’s material record—ceramics, metalwork and human and animal remains from excavations—speaks to elite ritual practice, long-distance exchange and the layered use of a landscape that governed trade, law and ceremony for centuries.
