Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, head towards the town of Kilindoni, which is the main town on Mafia Island. From any location in Coastal Zone, you will need to take the A7 road heading south towards the town of Mikindani, then continue on the A7 until you reach the junction for the ferry terminal that serves Mafia Island. The ferry terminal is located in a town called Tanga. Keep in mind that parking is available at the ferry terminal.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  For those opting for public transportation, take a bus from any major bus station in Coastal Zone to Tanga. Buses frequently depart throughout the day and the journey typically takes around 5-7 hours depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Tanga, you will need to find transport to the ferry terminal. Look for local taxis or ask the bus staff for directions to the ferry terminal. Expect to pay a small fare for the taxi, around 10,000-20,000 TZS.

• Ferry

  Once you arrive at the ferry terminal in Tanga, purchase a ticket for the ferry to Mafia Island. Ferries typically run several times a day, but be sure to check the schedule in advance as it can vary. The ferry ride takes approximately 2-3 hours. Ticket prices vary, but expect around 30,000-60,000 TZS for the journey. Be prepared for a possible wait at the terminal during peak times.

• Air Travel

  Alternatively, for a quicker option, you can also take a domestic flight to Mafia Island. Flights are available from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island. You would first need to travel to Dar es Salaam either by bus or car. From the airport, take a short flight (approximately 30 minutes) directly to Mafia Island. Flight costs can vary, typically ranging from 120,000 to 300,000 TZS depending on the airline and how early you book your ticket.
