History of Abilene

Railway Foundations in 1881

Abilene was established in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway reached the area, creating a new shipping and commercial point for the cattle country of West Texas. The town took its name from Abilene, Kansas, another important cattle centre associated with the western rail network. Railway access allowed livestock and agricultural goods to move to larger markets, while merchants, ranchers and workers settled around the tracks. This origin shaped Abilene's street plan, economy and outward-looking character. The arrival of the railway also helped turn a sparsely settled part of Taylor County into a durable regional centre rather than a temporary frontier camp.
