Getting There

• Walking

  If you are already inside McKinney Falls State Park, you can reach Smith Rock Shelter on foot. Begin at the main park entrance and head towards the Lower Falls Trailhead. Follow the Lower Falls Trail, which is clearly marked. After about half a mile, you will reach a fork in the trail. Keep left to stay on the Lower Falls Trail. Continue for another quarter-mile until you see signs directing you to Smith Rock Shelter. The shelter is a short walk from the trail, located in a scenic area perfect for a picnic.

• Biking

  For those with bicycles, you can start from the park's Visitor Center. Rent a bike if needed. From the Visitor Center, take the paved path towards the Lower Falls. Follow the same route as the walking trail, and you will find Smith Rock Shelter accessible by bike as you approach the fork in the trail. This option allows for a quicker journey while enjoying the park's scenery.

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, park at McKinney Falls State Park's main parking area. From the parking lot, head towards the Lower Falls Trailhead, which is a short walk away. You will not be able to drive directly to Smith Rock Shelter, as it is accessible only via trails. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for the short hike to the shelter.
