History of Çarşıbaşı

The Coastal Settlement of İskefiye

The area now known as Çarşıbaşı developed as a coastal settlement historically referred to as İskefiye. Its position between the sea and the wooded hills made it part of the long chain of small communities along the eastern Black Sea shore, where agriculture, fishing and coastal exchange shaped daily life. The interior was reached through steep valleys and hillside roads, while the coast connected local communities with neighbouring settlements in what is now Trabzon Province. Rather than growing as a monumental urban centre, the settlement evolved through dispersed villages, small commercial streets and working waterfronts.

Ottoman Coastal Connections

During the Ottoman period, İskefiye belonged to the wider coastal world of Trabzon, whose ports and roads linked Black Sea communities with the provincial centre and inland districts. Local economic life depended on small-scale farming, animal husbandry, fishing and the movement of regional produce. The terrain limited large-scale development, but coastal routes encouraged the growth of market activity and public services in the settlement. Religious buildings, village mosques, family houses and agricultural plots formed the physical landscape, much of which remained modest in scale rather than monumental.

From İskefiye to Çarşıbaşı

The settlement was renamed Çarşıbaşı, a name referring to the head or centre of the market area, as modern local administration developed in the Republican period. The district gained separate district status in 1990, formalising its role within Trabzon Province. Improved roads and the construction of the coastal transport corridor strengthened links with Trabzon, Vakfıkebir and Beşikdüzü, while also changing the relationship between the centre and its hillside villages. Today, fishing, small businesses, agriculture and commuting remain more important to local identity than large-scale tourism or heavy industry.
