Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car from any location in Elgon, head towards the town of Mbale. From Mbale, take the road leading to the Mount Elgon region. Look for signs indicating the direction to Mount Elgon Forest Reserve. The drive will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you reach the entrance of the forest reserve, there is usually a parking fee of about 10,000 UGX for vehicles.

• Public Transport (Matatu)

  To reach Mount Elgon Forest Reserve using public transportation, find a matatu (shared taxi) in Elgon heading towards Mbale. The cost for this ride is around 3,000 to 5,000 UGX. Once you reach Mbale, you will need to switch to another matatu that goes towards the Mount Elgon Forest Reserve area. This leg of the journey may cost an additional 5,000 UGX. The entire journey may take 2 to 3 hours, depending on waiting times and traffic. Ask the driver to drop you off at the reserve entrance.

• Bicycle

  For an adventurous option, you can rent a bicycle in Elgon and cycle towards Mount Elgon Forest Reserve. The route will typically take you through scenic landscapes and villages. The distance from Elgon to the reserve is approximately 30 km, which may take about 2 to 3 hours to bike, depending on your fitness level. Ensure to bring water and snacks for the journey. Bicycle rentals range from 10,000 to 20,000 UGX per day.

• Walking

  If you're up for a challenge, you can walk from Elgon to Mount Elgon Forest Reserve. This would require significant time and energy, taking approximately 6 to 8 hours.
