Getting There

  • Car

If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Arua city in West Nile. Take the Arua – Kampala highway (A1) heading southeast. Continue along this road for approximately 300 kilometers. As you approach Jinja, be aware of road signs indicating Lake Victoria. You can then take a diversion towards Jinja town, which is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria. The journey should take around 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Ensure your vehicle is fueled up and in good condition, as there are long stretches without many services.

  • Public Transportation

To reach Lake Victoria using public transportation, first, go to the Arua bus station and board a bus heading to Kampala. The trip should take about 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic. Buses typically leave every hour, but it's wise to check the schedule in advance. Once in Kampala, you can take a taxi or a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) to Jinja. This leg of the journey will take about 2 hours. Make sure to agree on the fare before starting your ride to avoid misunderstandings.

  • Taxi/Boda Boda

Upon reaching Jinja from Kampala, you can hire a taxi or a boda boda to take you directly to the shores of Lake Victoria. The taxi ride should take around 15-30 minutes depending on your exact destination around the lake. Boda bodas are a faster option and are quite affordable, usually costing around 10,000 to 20,000 UGX. Be sure to wear a helmet if you opt for a boda boda and discuss the fare before departing.
