Footdee, affectionately called Fittie by locals, sits on a spit of land at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, surrounded on three sides by water. Its origins trace back to medieval times, with the original settlement clustered around St Clement’s Church on the north side of the River Dee estuary. The modern village was purpose-built in the early 19th century to rehouse Aberdeen’s fishing community, designed by John Smith in 1808–9. This planned layout features 28 cottages arranged in two main squares—North Square and South Square—with additional housing added later in the 1830s and 1850s.

The cottages of Footdee are notable for their uniformity in size, shape, and style, reflecting a deliberate architectural vision. Originally single-storey thatched homes, some were later expanded with additional storeys by William Smith, son of John Smith, to alleviate overcrowding. The houses are arranged in regimented squares with narrow cobbled streets and small gardens, often with their backs turned to the sea to shield them from harsh coastal storms. This design fosters a close-knit community atmosphere, with shared courtyards and a village scale distinct from the surrounding city.

Though the fishing industry has evolved, Footdee remains a vibrant community with a strong maritime identity. Residents take pride in maintaining their colorful cottages and creatively decorating sheds with nautical themes, honoring the village’s seafaring roots. The community hosts ceilidhs, clubs, and film nights, preserving traditions while welcoming new life through renovated buildings and innovative uses of space. Footdee’s history is also marked by its connection to the North Sea oil industry, commemorated by a bronze statue honoring the divers who maintained offshore rigs.
