The modern village was purpose-built in the early 19th century to rehouse Aberdeen’s fishing community, designed by John Smith in 1808–9. This planned layout features 28 cottages arranged in two main squares—North Square and South Square—with additional housing added later in the 1830s and 1850s.

Originally single-storey thatched homes, some were later expanded with additional storeys by William Smith, son of John Smith, to alleviate overcrowding. Footdee’s history is also marked by its connection to the North Sea oil industry, commemorated by a bronze statue honoring the divers who maintained offshore rigs.
