Banff Castle’s history begins in the late 12th century as a motte-and-bailey castle, a common medieval fortification consisting of a steep artificial mound (motte) and a walled courtyard (bailey). It was originally built to defend against Viking incursions, particularly from King Haco of Norway. The castle’s position on the Banffshire coast made it a crucial defensive site, especially during Scotland’s Wars of Independence. It was one of the northernmost English garrisons until Robert the Bruce captured it in 1309, after which it was granted to the Earl of Ross.
