Medieval Origins and Strategic Importance

Banff Castle’s history begins in the late 12th century as a motte-and-bailey castle, a common medieval fortification consisting of a steep artificial mound (motte) and a walled courtyard (bailey). It was one of the northernmost English garrisons until Robert the Bruce captured it in 1309, after which it was granted to the Earl of Ross.
