A Highland Dream Realized

Lichen Caithness Reindeer Centre is the culmination of nearly two decades of dedication by a team passionate about the Highlands and reindeer. Inspired by visits to Lapland starting in 2005, the founders embarked on a journey to bring these Arctic animals to the far north of Scotland. Their commitment to research and learning has created a sanctuary where reindeer thrive in a landscape reminiscent of their native environment. Opened to the public in summer 2023, the centre offers a rare chance to experience reindeer up close in the UK’s most northerly location for these animals.

Meet the Reindeer Family

Visitors to Lichen Caithness can meet the resident reindeer—Sven, Levvi, and Mr Antlers—each with their own personality and story. The centre’s ‘Reindeer Reception’ invites guests into an immersive experience, sharing fascinating insights into the animals’ biology, behavior, and Arctic origins. The interactions are designed to be both educational and heartwarming, allowing guests to connect with these gentle creatures in a serene Highland setting.

Engaging Experiences and Sessions

The centre offers weekday evening sessions titled 'Your Evening as a Reindeer Herder' from Monday to Friday at 6pm, where visitors can learn about herding and caring for reindeer. Weekend sessions take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am and 6pm, providing additional opportunities for encounters. These sessions are intimate and informative, suitable for all ages, and designed to deepen appreciation for the animals and their environment.

Setting and Surroundings

Located in Middlebie, Harpsdale near Halkirk, the centre is set within the wild and tranquil landscapes of Caithness. The natural surroundings enhance the visitor experience, offering picturesque views and a peaceful atmosphere. The remote Highland environment is integral to the wellbeing of the reindeer and adds to the authenticity of the encounter, making each visit a memorable escape into nature.

Passion for Conservation and Education

Beyond visitor experiences, Lichen Caithness is dedicated to conservation and raising awareness about reindeer and their habitats. The team’s deep respect for the environment and the animals is evident in their approach, emphasizing sustainable practices and education. Guests leave not only with memories but also with a greater understanding of the challenges facing reindeer populations and the importance of preserving natural heritage.
