Historic Building and Setting

The pub stands on the east side of Trumpington High Street in a Grade II listed 15th-century hall-house. Original timber framing survives inside, though much was concealed during 1954 modernisation and later extensions. The building features a central block with attics, gabled cross-wings and a rear south wing, set slightly below the modern road level. Trumpington itself is a historic village now on Cambridge’s southern urban edge, with nearby cottages and other pubs forming a traditional streetscape.

Dining and Drink Offer

The venue operates as a Mitchells & Butlers Premium Country Pub with table service throughout. The menu focuses on seasonal British gastropub cooking including Sunday roasts, steaks, fish dishes, burgers and pies, plus vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Real ales, wines, lagers and cocktails are available at the bar. A children’s menu and highchairs are provided. Walk-ins are accepted when space allows, but advance booking is recommended for evenings and weekends.

Garden and Outdoor Space

A substantial beer garden and terrace behind the building accommodates up to around 200 people in good weather. Garden seating becomes the main draw on warm afternoons and evenings, while indoor rooms absorb demand during rain. The outdoor area offers umbrellas and some shelter but remains exposed to wind typical of East Anglia.

Practical Access from Cambridge

Frequent Stagecoach PR3 buses run from the city centre to stops on or opposite the High Street, with a journey time of about 13 minutes. Cycling takes 15–20 minutes. Taxis from central Cambridge take around 10 minutes. On-site rear parking is available but limited; street parking on the through-road is restricted. Cambridge South station lies roughly 20–25 minutes’ walk away.

Visitor Experience and Pacing

A typical visit lasts 1.5–2.5 hours for a full meal. The atmosphere is lively and family-capable rather than quiet or solitary. Smart-casual dress is appropriate. The venue handles groups, celebrations and larger bookings, with a 10% service charge applied to tables of six or more. Food hygiene standards were rated very good in the most recent inspection.

Seasonality and Crowds

Sunday lunch, Friday and Saturday evenings, and warm weekend afternoons draw the largest numbers. Weekday mid-afternoons are quieter. The garden sees heaviest use in summer; indoor rooms remain busy year-round for roasts and meals regardless of weather.
