Building and Location

The restaurant sits in the former Outpatients department of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, built on Trumpington Street in the early twentieth century. The hospital itself dates to 1766; the outpatients wing opened around 1914. After the main hospital functions moved to Hills Road in the 1980s, the building was converted and Browns opened in 1987. The pillared stone front, framed by creeper, faces the Fitzwilliam Museum. Judge Business School occupies the adjacent former main block. The setting is firmly civic and academic, with colleges and the historic core a short walk north.

Menu and Service

The kitchen produces standard British brasserie dishes: fish and chips, steaks, seafood, Sunday roasts, burgers, and desserts such as sticky toffee pudding. Separate menus cover brunch, bottomless brunch, afternoon tea, children’s meals, and gluten-free options. Service is table-based. Smart-casual dress is expected; sportswear is discouraged. Reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are accommodated when space permits. Meals typically last 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

The dining rooms are large and high-ceilinged with generous windows. A prominent bar runs through the space, and a piano stands near the entrance. Live piano music is scheduled on Fridays and Sundays. The overall feel is bright and bustling rather than quiet or romantic. The venue can seat around 250 and offers a smaller Camelot Room for private groups of about 40. An outdoor terrace is brought into use during good weather.

Guests arrive for breakfast before a museum visit, lunch between college tours, afternoon tea, or evening meals after sightseeing. The restaurant also hosts graduation parties, birthdays, and business lunches. It functions as a reliable, central dining room rather than a destination attraction. Food quality and value receive mixed comments; service is more consistently noted.

Practical Access

The site is reached on foot from King’s Parade in under twelve minutes. Buses from the station stop directly outside the Fitzwilliam Museum. Taxis or rideshares take a few minutes. Cycling is straightforward along Trumpington Street. Driving is discouraged; central parking is limited and expensive, and the restaurant has no dedicated spaces. Wheelchair access exists at ground level with an accessible toilet, though some visitors report heavy doors.
