The Oak Bistro stands on the corner of Lensfield Road and Hills Road in Cambridge, a Grade II listed building originally constructed in the 18th century as a coaching inn on the historic London road. The two-storey colourwashed-brick structure with sash windows and a 19th-century public-house frontage operated as The Oak pub before later uses that included a wine bar. Since March 2009 the site has been run as an independent restaurant by owner Philip Newman. The building retains its compact street frontage while extending into a rear courtyard that once housed stables.

Visitors arrive for reserved tables and choose between the main indoor room with dark wood, banquette seating, exposed brick, and local artwork or the covered courtyard with retractable roof, heaters, and blankets. Lunch offers a weekday set menu while dinner follows an à la carte list. Frequently ordered dishes include Beef Wellington, confit duck leg, scallops, king prawns, sticky toffee pudding, and chocolate fondant. Service remains attentive yet unfussy, with the owner often present. The atmosphere suits business lunches by day and romantic or celebratory dinners in the evening.

Bookings are strongly recommended, especially for dinner and weekend evenings. The venue closes on Sundays and offers dinner only on Mondays. A typical meal lasts between one and three hours depending on the number of courses and drinks. The restaurant maintains a full bar and lists vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Highchairs are available and a private dining room can be reserved. Street parking is the only option listed; most guests arrive on foot, by bicycle, or by local bus.

The indoor dining room is intimate and fully enclosed. The Secret Garden courtyard operates year-round under its marquee cover. The location sits opposite the Cambridge University Botanic Garden and within a short walk of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Downing College, and Trumpington Street. The setting remains urban rather than rural, with the historic brick streetscape providing the immediate view.
