Victorian corner pub near Cambridge station serving wood-fired pizzas and real ales in a neighbourhood setting

A Victorian neighbourhood pub on Tenison Road, five minutes from Cambridge station, offering wood-fired pizzas, cask ales and a small courtyard garden. The interior retains a worn-in local feel with mixed seating and a visible pizza oven. Visitors arrive mainly for meals and drinks rather than sightseeing, with weekday afternoons quieter and evenings busier. It draws station arrivals, nearby residents and those seeking a non-touristy option away from the city centre. Monday pizza deals and Sunday roasts are popular.

Setting and atmosphere

The Salisbury Arms occupies a large corner-plot Victorian building at 76 Tenison Road in the Petersfield area, between Cambridge station and Mill Road. The single-room interior features a steel-topped bar and a wood-fired oven that forms part of the main space. Mixed furniture, picnic benches and old beer-festival posters create an informal neighbourhood feel rather than a polished tourist venue. A small rear courtyard serves as both garden and smoking area.

Food and drink

The kitchen produces wood-fired pizzas, one-pot comfort dishes and Sunday roasts with smaller children's portions available. Gluten-free and vegan pizza options exist. The bar stocks cask ales, craft beers and cocktails. Monday operates as a 2-for-1 pizza day with a reduced menu, while midweek pint and pizza-and-drink offers appear regularly. Food service finishes earlier than bar closing times.

History

First licensed in 1886 as the Salisbury Hotel, the building closed in 1973 before CAMRA Investments reopened it in 1976 as a real-ale house. It later passed to Wells & Co and was refurbished around a pizza-and-pots concept. Some locals still refer to it as the CAMRA pub, and early Cambridge Beer Festival posters remain on display.

Practical visit

Most visits last one to two hours for a meal and drinks. Weekday afternoons are often quiet enough for small groups or laptop work. Evenings, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday lunch bring higher numbers. Table booking is available and takeaway pizza is offered. No admission charge applies.

Access

The pub lies roughly 500 metres from Cambridge station, a five-minute walk. City buses stop nearby and cycling is straightforward on flat streets. From the historic centre allow twenty to twenty-five minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. Residential street parking is limited and driving is not recommended.
