Lowther Castle was completed in 1812 as one of the finest Gothic mansions in northwest England. It once boasted a room for every day of the year and hosted Britain’s elite for over a century. However, the 20th century brought decline; the castle was abandoned, occupied by the army during wartime, and partially demolished in 1957. For decades, it stood as a haunting shell, home only to wildlife and nature’s reclamation.

Today, the castle ruins serve as a dramatic backdrop for extensive gardens that blend historic and contemporary designs. The Garden-in-the-Ruins showcases plants growing through ancient walls, while the Parterre offers a modern take on traditional garden layouts with woolly yew hedges and unusual perennials. The Yew Avenue and Western Terrace remain largely unchanged since the 17th century, preserving the estate’s historic character. The Rose Garden, designed by Dan Pearson, adds vibrant color and fragrance, creating a sensory oasis.

Surrounding the gardens, ancient woodlands provide a natural setting for exploration and play. The Lost Castle Adventure Playground is one of the UK’s largest, featuring zip wires, turrets, slides, ropes, and sandpits designed for children of all ages. Visitors can relax in the stylish café located in the castle courtyard, which serves freshly prepared, locally sourced food, including breakfast, lunch, and takeaway options. Additional food options are available at "Into the Woods," a casual spot deep in the woodland offering soups, sandwiches, and ice creams.

Its location offers a peaceful yet scenic environment, combining natural beauty with cultural heritage. The site is accessible year-round, except Christmas Day, with summer and winter opening hours.

The estate welcomes visitors of all abilities, with mostly wheelchair-accessible facilities and assistance available for less mobile guests. Dogs on leads are allowed except in the adventure playground. Parking is modestly priced, and annual pass holders enjoy free parking.
