Lowther Castle was completed in 1812 as one of the finest Gothic mansions in northwest England. It once boasted a room for every day of the year and hosted Britain’s elite for over a century. However, the 20th century brought decline; the castle was abandoned, occupied by the army during wartime, and partially demolished in 1957. For decades, it stood as a haunting shell, home only to wildlife and nature’s reclamation.

The Garden-in-the-Ruins showcases plants growing through ancient walls, while the Parterre offers a modern take on traditional garden layouts with woolly yew hedges and unusual perennials. The Yew Avenue and Western Terrace remain largely unchanged since the 17th century, preserving the estate’s historic character. The Rose Garden, designed by Dan Pearson, adds vibrant color and fragrance, creating a sensory oasis.

The Lost Castle Adventure Playground is one of the UK’s largest, featuring zip wires, turrets, slides, ropes, and sandpits designed for children of all ages. Dogs on leads are allowed except in the adventure playground. Parking is modestly priced, and annual pass holders enjoy free parking.
