Founded over 40 years ago, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has grown into a globally recognized institution dedicated to researching and promoting sustainable living. Located in Llwyngwern Quarry near Machynlleth, Mid Wales, CAT was established with the mission to explore practical solutions to environmental challenges. Its setting within the Dyfi Biosphere, a UNESCO-designated area, underscores its commitment to ecological stewardship and innovation.

At the heart of CAT is its award-winning Visitor Centre, constructed entirely from sustainable materials, showcasing cutting-edge green building techniques. The site features a variety of experimental buildings that demonstrate energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Visitors can explore working examples of renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric systems, integrated seamlessly into the landscape.

CAT encompasses over seven acres of organically managed gardens and woodlands. These include forest gardening, composting demonstrations, and wildlife habitats designed to support biodiversity. Although currently closed to casual day visitors, CAT remains open for pre-booked group visits, courses, and events. The campus includes eco-friendly accommodation with 24 bedrooms, a light-filled theatre with a 150-person capacity, and multiple breakout rooms. The on-site café serves exclusively vegetarian and vegan options, aligning with CAT’s sustainability ethos. The Eco Shop offers a selection of environmentally responsible products, further enhancing the visitor experience.

CAT actively promotes wellbeing and mental health through its natural setting and wellness-focused activities. It holds Bee Friendly status, supporting pollinator conservation as part of Welsh Government initiatives. The center also provides mobility scooter hire and wheelchair access, ensuring inclusivity.
