Origins Rooted in Friendship and Tradition

Summerhall Distillery began as a passionate project between two friends, Matthew Gammell and Marcus Pickering, who shared a love for gin and inherited a family secret recipe dating back to 1947. Despite having no prior distilling experience, they transformed a disused dog kennel space within the historic Summerhall arts venue into a fully operational distillery. Opening its doors in 2014, it was the first exclusive gin distillery to launch in Edinburgh for over a century and a half, reviving a long-lost local craft tradition.

A Historic and Creative Setting

Located at 1 Summerhall Square in Newington, the distillery occupies part of the former Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, a site rich in history and architectural significance. Summerhall itself is a vibrant arts hub hosting galleries, theaters, studios, and festivals, which infuses the distillery with a creative and community-focused atmosphere. The distillery’s presence alongside a microbrewery and a bar that serves its gin by tap creates a unique neighborhood synergy.

Innovative Craftsmanship and Spirit Range

Summerhall Distillery operates two 500-litre traditional Portuguese alembic copper stills named Emily and Gertrude, retrofitted with hot water baths for precise distillation. Their flagship product, Pickering’s Gin, is crafted from the original 1947 Bombay recipe, blending fragrant spices and fresh citrus botanicals. Over the years, the distillery has expanded its portfolio to include navy strength gins, cask-aged varieties, and flavored expressions, continuously innovating while honoring traditional methods.

Global Recognition and Partnerships

The distillery quickly gained acclaim, becoming the official gin supplier to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with its Navy Strength Gin. It has forged notable partnerships with prestigious organizations such as Cunard Cruise Lines and British Airways, creating bespoke gins tailored for unique experiences. The viral success of Pickering’s Gin Baubles and the launch of the Speakeasy Experience during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival highlight the brand’s cultural impact.
