A Unique Farm Distillery Heritage
Kilchoman Distillery stands out as the only distillery in Scotland that completes every stage of whisky production on its own farm. Founded in 2005 on the west coast of Islay, it revived a tradition unseen on the island for over a century. The distillery grows its own barley at Rockside Farm, malted on traditional floor maltings, distilled in small copper stills designed for maximum contact, matured in bourbon, sherry, and experimental casks, and finally bottled on site. This farm-to-bottle approach preserves a deep connection to the land and agricultural heritage, making Kilchoman a true craft producer with an annual output of around 500,000 litres.Distinctive Whisky Character and Range
Kilchoman’s whiskies are celebrated for their classic Islay peat smoke balanced with floral sweetness and light citrus notes. The small stills contribute to a maritime character that reflects the island’s rugged coastal environment. The core range includes the acclaimed Machir Bay, launched in 2012, alongside the 100% Islay Single Farm Single Malt, first released in 2011. Limited editions and distillery exclusives offer further variety, showcasing the distillery’s innovative spirit and dedication to quality. The whiskies are matured mainly in bourbon and sherry casks, with some expressions aged in specialty barrels to enhance complexity.Visitor Experience and Facilities
The Kilchoman Visitor Centre is open seven days a week, featuring a whisky tasting bar where visitors can sample the full range, including archive releases, without needing a booking. Guided tours run throughout the day, from classic one-hour walks through the malt floor, kiln, stillhouse, and dunnage warehouses, to more in-depth experiences like the Limited Edition Tasting & Tour and the sensory Roving Tasting Tour. The on-site café serves freshly prepared lunches, including the famous Cullen Skink, as well as homemade cakes and barista-style coffee. The café welcomes dogs and offers designated pet-friendly tables with advance booking recommended.Immersive Guided Tours and Tastings
Kilchoman offers a variety of tours tailored to different interests. The Classic Tour provides an introduction to the whisky-making process with two whisky samples. The Limited Edition Tour delves deeper, featuring a tutored tasting of rare expressions. The Roving Tasting Tour is a multi-sensory journey through the distillery’s key production areas, ending with a tasting of a single cask exclusive. Winter tours, available from November to February, offer a cozy, in-depth experience of traditional methods and include three drams. Booking in advance is advised for all tours and lunch packages.Community and Sustainability Commitment
As a family-run, independent distillery, Kilchoman maintains strong ties to the local community and environment. Its sustainable farm operations and traditional practices reflect a commitment to eco-friendly whisky production. The distillery’s location near the Atlantic Ocean and Loch Gorm offers stunning natural surroundings, enhancing the visitor experience with scenic views and a tranquil atmosphere. Kilchoman’s approach combines respect for heritage with innovation, making it a unique destination for whisky lovers and cultural heritage enthusiasts alike.Welcoming Atmosphere and Accessibility
Kilchoman’s visitor centre and café provide a warm, friendly environment where guests can relax and enjoy the island’s hospitality. Staff are knowledgeable and passionate, ready to guide visitors through tastings and answer questions. The distillery is accessible with easy access for most visitors, though some tours involve walking on uneven surfaces. The café and visitor centre are equipped to welcome families, solo travelers, and groups, including pet owners. With regular opening hours and a variety of experiences, Kilchoman offers a memorable day out on Islay.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
