Getting There

  • Car

Drive from Portnalong via the A863 eastwards for about 5 miles until reaching an unmarked road to Talisker Waterfall. The narrow single-track road leads to a small parking layby with space for a few cars. Drive cautiously due to the narrowness and limited parking. The walk from the parking area to the waterfall and beach is approximately 20-30 minutes.

  • Public Transport

Take a bus from Portree to Carbost village; buses run several times daily but check schedules in advance. From Carbost, walk approximately 2 miles along marked paths toward Talisker Distillery and then to the waterfall and beach. The terrain includes farmland and uneven paths.

  • Walking

If nearby, hike directly to Talisker Waterfall and Bay via well-marked trails starting at the small parking area. The walk is mostly flat but includes some muddy and uneven sections. Suitable footwear is recommended, and dogs should be leashed around livestock.

Discover more about Talisker Waterfall

The Majestic Talisker Waterfall

Talisker Waterfall is one of the Isle of Skye’s most impressive natural features, tumbling from a height of about 60 meters down steep cliffs into the rocky pool below. Set against the backdrop of the island’s rugged Scottish Highlands, the waterfall’s powerful flow is often accompanied by rainbows on sunny days, enhancing its photogenic appeal. The sound of rushing water combined with the surrounding tranquil greenery creates a peaceful setting that invites visitors to pause and connect with nature.

Exploring Talisker Bay Beach

Adjacent to the waterfall lies Talisker Bay, a beautiful sandy beach framed by towering cliffs. The beach stretches extensively at low tide and is famous for its dramatic sea stacks on the southern end, accessible by scrambling along the shore when tides are low. The west-facing orientation makes it a prime location for stunning sunset views, with the waterfall visible on the northern side, sometimes blown back by the wind, adding to the dynamic landscape.

The Scenic Walk to the Bay

Access to Talisker Bay involves a roughly 1-mile walk from a small roadside parking area located along a narrow single-track road. The path passes through private farmland and a large walled garden, crossing a stream and traversing fields before reaching the beach. The walk is mostly flat but can be muddy depending on the season, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Livestock such as sheep and cows graze nearby, so visitors should keep dogs on a leash where indicated.

Visitor Experience and Atmosphere

Visitors to Talisker Waterfall and Bay enjoy a blend of dramatic coastal scenery and peaceful rural charm. The area is largely undeveloped, with no facilities such as toilets or food options nearby, enhancing its wild and natural feel. The waterfall’s proximity to the beach offers a unique combination of sights, while the quiet, often breezy environment helps keep midges at bay during summer evenings. Camping is permitted on the beach with respect for the environment.

Practical Considerations and Accessibility

Parking is limited to a small layby about 500 meters before the road ends, and the narrow road requires careful driving. The walk from parking to the beach takes about 20-30 minutes each way. Public transport options include buses to Carbost village, followed by a longer walk to the site. The trail is open year-round, but weather conditions can affect trail slipperiness. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and limited amenities.

Natural Significance and Surrounding Landscape

Talisker Waterfall and Bay are part of the Isle of Skye’s iconic coastal landscape, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife, including seabirds and Highland cattle. The dramatic cliffs and sea stacks contribute to the area’s geological interest, while the waterfall itself is a highlight for photographers and nature lovers. Nearby attractions include the Talisker Distillery and other renowned Skye hiking trails, making this location a rewarding stop for those exploring the island.
