The Pier Arts Centre was established in 1979 to house the remarkable collection of British fine art donated by Margaret Gardiner, an author, peace activist, and philanthropist. Gardiner’s vision was to create a dedicated space in Orkney for the public to engage with modern British art. Housed in a complex of historic buildings in Stromness, the Centre underwent a major redevelopment completed in 2007. This project included the addition of a striking modern gallery building on one of Stromness’s iconic piers, which won the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland’s Andrew Doolan Award for Best Building in Scotland. The architecture harmoniously blends the town’s maritime heritage with contemporary design, offering visitors inspiring views over Stromness harbour and a unique spatial experience.
