Craigmillar Castle stands as a remarkable example of medieval architecture and Scottish heritage. Construction began in the early 15th century by the Preston family and continued over the next 250 years, evolving from a defensive tower house into a comfortable noble residence. The castle’s L-plan tower house remains a dominant feature, surrounded by a curtain wall enclosing gardens, a dovecot, and pastureland. Its history is deeply intertwined with Edinburgh and Scotland’s turbulent past, including its role during the Scottish Wars of Independence.

The castle is famously linked to Mary Queen of Scots, who sought refuge here twice, notably after the murder of her secretary, David Rizzio. It was also the site where conspirators plotted the assassination of her husband, Lord Darnley. Mary’s visits brought life to the castle, with records of her engaging in archery and hunting nearby. The two ancient yew trees at the entrance are believed to commemorate her stays, symbolizing longevity and the wood’s traditional use for crafting bows.

Visitors can explore the castle’s five levels, including the great hall, private chambers, and the prison in the basement (currently closed for safety). The site welcomes dogs on leads, except in roofed areas, and provides level access paths with benches for rest.
