Greyfriars Burial Ground occupies the site of a Franciscan monastery founded in 1496 by Laurence Oliphant, 1st Lord Oliphant. This religious community thrived for over sixty years until the Scottish Reformation of the 1560s, when the monastery was destroyed in 1559 as part of the widespread dissolution of religious houses across Scotland. Rather than remaining abandoned, the land was repurposed as Perth's town graveyard from 1580 onwards, transforming sacred monastic ground into a burial place for the city's residents. In 1997, when proposals emerged to rebuild the cemetery's eastern wall, the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust conducted excavations that revealed the burial ground's complex past. Test pits uncovered what is believed to be the original monastery wall foundations, along with a succession of wall replacements and repairs undertaken during the monastery's lifespan—each raising the ground level incrementally. Medieval pottery was discovered, likely associated with the soil of a lower garden that once abutted the original monastery wall. The second pit demonstrated that certain areas lay outside the original monastery grounds, instead forming part of the 1795 graveyard extension. Evidence of infilling and levelling layers suggested that a burn, which once ran along the burial ground's southern wall, had been covered with soil in earlier times. These archaeological findings provide tangible proof of the site's layered history.

Greyfriars Burial Ground is now Category A listed and holds one of Scotland's finest collections of gravestones. The cemetery's southern wall features a protective roofed shelter housing thirteen early gravestones, moved for conservation purposes. Among these is the oldest gravestone in the cemetery, dating to 1580 and bearing the name Buchan. The intricate stonework throughout the grounds showcases historical artistry, with many headstones displaying memento mori symbols and detailed inscriptions that chronicle the lives of Perth's prominent citizens, merchants, and influential figures. The gravestones serve as both artistic achievements and historical documents, recording the names, dates, and accomplishments of those buried within.

The cemetery contains the graves of several significant Perth residents whose contributions shaped the city's development. Among them is Adam Anderson, a physicist and architect of the Perth Water Works, buried around 500 feet south of his original resting place. These burials reflect Perth's social and professional history, with many stones marking merchants, craftspeople, and civic leaders whose work influenced the city's growth and character.
