Discover more about Barber wood
A Woodland Rich in History and Natural Diversity
Barber Wood spans approximately 39 hectares (96 acres) and is situated near Coberley, south of Cheltenham. The site was acquired in partnership with The Countryside Commission and named after Lord Barber of Tewkesbury, a former chairman. It features a blend of young mixed broadleaf plantations alongside open limestone grassland, creating a varied habitat that supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The wood includes historic planted roundels dating back to the 1800s, with species such as beech, pine, and horse chestnut, reflecting its long-standing connection to the local landscape.Flora and Fauna in a Native Broadleaf Setting
The woodland itself is composed mainly of even-aged blocks of native broadleaved trees including ash, beech, birch, field maple, whitebeam, yew, and pedunculate oak. The shrub layer is rich with hawthorn, blackthorn, dogwood, guelder rose, spindle, and hazel, providing excellent cover and food sources for wildlife. The open grassland areas complement the woodland, supporting limestone-loving plants and offering scenic views across the Cotswolds. This combination creates a biodiverse environment that appeals to botanists, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts alike.Visitor Experience and Pathways Through Nature
Visitors to Barber Wood can explore a network of mainly permissive grassy paths that offer both circular and linear routes. While most paths are accessible, some areas are steep and can become muddy or slippery, especially on the slopes, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Entrance points feature gates and kissing gates, though disabled access is limited due to the terrain. The Gloucestershire Way, a long-distance footpath, passes through the wood alongside a bridleway, linking Barber Wood to wider walking routes in the region.Facilities and Practical Information
Barber Wood provides a small car park off the busy A436 road, accommodating about eight vehicles. Visitors should exercise caution when parking and crossing this fast road. There are no toilets or refreshment facilities on site, but public toilets are available nearby at the A436 layby near Seven Springs roundabout and at Crickley Hill Country Park visitor centre. The wood is open year-round, offering opportunities for peaceful picnics, wildlife observation, and seasonal changes in scenery.Setting Within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
This woodland reserve lies within the Cotswolds AONB, a region renowned for its rolling hills, limestone geology, and picturesque villages. Barber Wood’s elevated position on a large hill provides a tranquil natural retreat away from urban centers, with views that capture the essence of the Cotswold countryside. The site’s management by the Woodland Trust ensures conservation efforts maintain its ecological value and public enjoyment.Connection to Nearby Natural Sites
From the same car park, visitors can also access Ullen Wood, a private woodland with permissive footpaths, expanding the range of walking options. The proximity to other natural reserves and countryside paths makes Barber Wood a valuable part of the local network of green spaces, encouraging exploration and appreciation of Gloucestershire’s natural heritage.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
