Car
If you are traveling by car, start on Skyline Drive, which runs the length of Shenandoah National Park. Depending on your starting point, drive north or south along Skyline Drive. Look for mile marker 46, where you will find the parking area for the Hawksbill Summit trailhead. The parking area is marked, and it's important to arrive early, especially on weekends, as it can fill up quickly. There is no entrance fee for pedestrians, but if you are driving, be aware that there is an entrance fee for the park, which is $30 per vehicle for a 7-day pass.
Hiking
Once you park at the Hawksbill Summit trailhead, you will need to hike approximately 2.1 miles to reach the summit. Follow the white-blazed Hawksbill Summit Trail, which is moderately steep but well-maintained. Be prepared for a bit of elevation gain, as Hawksbill Summit is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park at 4,050 feet. The trail offers beautiful views and is a great opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the park.
Public Transportation
Currently, there are no direct public transportation options to Hawksbill Summit within Shenandoah National Park. However, if you are staying in nearby towns such as Luray or Front Royal, you can use local taxi services or rideshare apps to reach the park entrance. Once you arrive at the park, you will need to use a personal vehicle or a taxi to get to the Hawksbill Summit trailhead as public transportation does not operate within the park.
