Car
If you're driving from Ellensburg, WA, start by heading east on I-90 E. Take exit 106 for WA-821 S toward Yakima. Continue on WA-821 S for approximately 26 miles. Then take the exit toward Umtanum Recreation Area. Follow the signs for Umtanum Ridge, which will involve a short drive on a gravel road. Note that there might be a small parking fee for the recreation area, typically around $5.
Public Transportation + Hiking
For those traveling by public transport, take the bus from Yakima to Ellensburg (check the schedule on the Yakima Transit website). Once in Ellensburg, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to get to the Umtanum Recreation Area. Taxis may charge around $30-$50 for the trip, depending on the distance and time of day. After arriving at the Umtanum Recreation Area, you can hike to Umtanum Ridge via the marked trails.
Hiking from Umtanum Recreation Area
Once you arrive at the Umtanum Recreation Area, park in the designated area and start your hike towards Umtanum Ridge. The trail is well-marked and offers spectacular views. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trail can be steep in places. The hike to the ridge typically takes about 1-2 hours depending on your pace.
