Car
If you're starting from Pinedale, Wyoming, take US-191 North for about 40 miles. When you reach the junction for Wyoming 352, take a left onto this road and follow it until you reach the Elkhart Park Trailhead. This is the primary access point to Wind River Peak. The parking area is free but can fill up quickly during peak season, so arriving early is recommended. From the trailhead, the hike to Wind River Peak begins.
Public Transportation + Hiking
For those relying on public transportation, take a Greyhound bus to Pinedale, Wyoming. From there, you will need to arrange a local taxi or rideshare service to take you to Elkhart Park Trailhead. Be aware that taxi services may require advance booking, especially during tourist season. Once at the trailhead, you can begin your hike up to Wind River Peak, which is approximately a 12-15 mile trail, depending on your chosen route.
Hiking
From the Elkhart Park Trailhead, follow the trail that leads into the Wind River Range. The trail is well-marked. After around 5 miles, you will reach the beautiful Island Lake where you can take a break. Continue on the trail towards the peak, which will require navigating some rocky terrain and potentially steep inclines. The last part of the hike requires some scrambling, so ensure you have proper footwear and are prepared for a strenuous ascent. The total hike to Wind River Peak and back can take 8-12 hours depending on your pace and fitness level.
