Car Rental
If you're in a major city in Eastern Province, such as Chipata, you can rent a car from several local rental agencies. From Chipata, head west on the Great East Road (A1) for approximately 70 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to Lake Chilengwa, which is located just off the main road at a turnoff near the village of Chilengwa. The road to the lake will be a gravel road, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for such terrain.
Public Transportation (Minibus)
From Chipata, locate the bus station where minibuses to local villages are available. Take a minibus that is headed towards the town of Mchinji. Inform the driver that you want to get off at the turnoff for Lake Chilengwa. The fare should be around 15 ZMW. Once you arrive at the turnoff, you may need to walk about 5 kilometers down the gravel road to reach the lake, or you can hire a local bicycle taxi, which typically costs around 20 ZMW.
Bicycle Hire
For a more adventurous route, consider renting a bicycle in Chipata. From Chipata, cycle west on the Great East Road for about 70 kilometers. After reaching the turnoff for Lake Chilengwa, continue along the gravel road. This route offers beautiful scenery and a chance to interact with local communities along the way. Ensure to carry plenty of water and snacks, as there may not be shops nearby.
Use Tower Bridge as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
