Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Chinsali, which is one of the main towns in Muchinga Province. Head east on the Great North Road (T2) for approximately 20 kilometers. You will see signs indicating the direction towards the Muchinga Mountains. The roads are generally in good condition, but be cautious of potholes and wildlife on the road. After about 20 kilometers, turn left onto a dirt road that leads directly to the base of the Muchinga Mountains. Follow this road for another 15 kilometers until you reach the entrance to the Muchinga Mountains area. Be prepared for some uneven terrain, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for better access.
Public Transportation
For those opting for public transportation, start by taking a bus from Chinsali to Nakonde. The buses usually leave hourly and the fare is around ZMW 50-60. Upon reaching Nakonde, you will need to find a local taxi or motorbike (boda-boda) to take you to the Muchinga Mountains. The cost for this taxi ride is approximately ZMW 30-50, and it will take about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Make sure to confirm that the driver knows the route to the Muchinga Mountains and is familiar with the area.
Hiking
If you are adventurous and enjoy hiking, you can start from the nearest village at the foot of the Muchinga Mountains. There are several trails that lead into the mountains, starting from the village of Chama. It is advisable to hire a local guide for safety and to ensure you don’t get lost. The guide can cost around ZMW 150-200 for a day, but it's worth it for the knowledge and safety. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and prepare for a full day of hiking.
